Amorphous, Smart, and Bioinspired Polyphosphate Nano/Microparticles: A Biomaterial for Regeneration and Repair of Osteo-Articular Impairments In-Situ

Using femur explants from mice as an in vitro model, we investigated the effect of the physiological polymer, inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), on differentiation of the cells of the bone marrow in their natural microenvironment into the osteogenic and chondrogenic lineages. In the form of amorphous Ca-polyP nano/microparticles, polyP retains its function to act as both an intra- and extracellular metabolic fuel and a stimulus eliciting morphogenetic signals. Long-term leisure time physical activity and properties of bone: A twin study

Effects of physical activity on bone properties, when controlled for genetic effects, are not fully understood. We aimed to study the association between long-term leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and bone properties using twin pairs known to be discordant for leisure time physical activity for at least 30 yr. Thanatophoric dysplasia in monozygotic twins discordant for cloverleaf skull: Prenatal diagnosis, clinical and pathological findings

We present male monozygotic twins with thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) type I concordant for long bone abnormalities and discordant for cloverleaf skull. The twins were the product of the second pregnancy of unrelated parents, with advanced paternal age. Prenatal diagnosis and postmortem examination showed severe rhizomelic shortness of limbs, bowing of the long bones with "telephone-receiver" femora in both twins, and cloverleaf skull and hydrocephalus in one of them. It is now accepted that most of cases of TD, such as in the present report, represent an autosomal dominant mutation with a high new mutations rate.

High-energy extracorporeal shock wave treatment of nonunions.

Forty-three consecutive patients who did not have healing of tibial or femoral diaphyseal and metaphyseal fractures and osteotomies for at least 9 months after injury or surgery were examined prospectively for use of high-energy extracorporeal shock waves. Former treatment modalities (cast, external fixator, plate osteosynthesis, limitation of weightbearing) remained unchanged. In all cases a 99m Technetium dicarboxyphosphonate regional two-phase bone scintigraphy was performed before one treatment with 3000 impulses of an energy flux density of 0.6 mJ/mm 2 . Ultrasound velocity and cortical bone characteristics in vivo.

Axial transmission of ultrasound along cortical bone may reflect a combination of material and structural properties of long bone cortices. The goal of this study was to determine the association of speed of sound (SOS) with cortical density (CoD), cortical wall thickness (CWT), and total cortical area (CoA). Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) were used to measure the above variables in the distal third of radius and the midshaft of tibia in 51 postmenopausal women aged 62 to 71 years. Split hand/foot malformation with long-bone deficiency andBHLHA9duplication: report of 13 new families

Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) with long-bone deficiency (SHFLD, MIM#119100) is a rare condition characterized by SHFM associated with long-bone malformation usually involving the tibia. Previous published data reported several unrelated patients with 17p13.3 duplication and SHFLD. Recently, the minimal critical region had been reduced, suggesting that BHLHA9 copy number gains are associated with this limb defect. Here, we report on 13 new families presenting with ectrodactyly and harboring a BHLHA9 duplication.

Thickness sensitivity of ultrasound velocity in long bone phantoms

One approach to bone disease diagnosis such as osteoporosis is to measure the velocity of ultrasound propagating axially along long bones. In this study, the variation in velocity as a function of radial position was assessed using two polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bone phantoms with cross-sectional geometry similar to the human tibia but differing in medullary cavity diameter. Two ultrasonometers were used: these were a commercial device operating at a relatively high frequency (HF) of 1.25 MHz and a prototype low frequency (LF) device operating at approximately 200 kHz. Coded excitation speeds up the detection of the fundamental flexural guided wave in coated tubes

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) permits ultrasonic assessment of the wall thickness of solid waveguides, such as tubes or, e.g., long cortical bones. Recently, an optical non-contact method was proposed for ultrasound excitation and detection with the aim of facilitating the FFGW reception by suppressing the interfering modes from the soft coating. This technique suffers from low SNR and requires iterative physical scanning across the source-receiver distance for 2D-FFT analysis.
